Thomas Easton was a Grantham man. The son of the Revd Richard
Easton, he was baptised at St Wulfram's on 8th December 1737, (the
son of Richard and Sarah Easton) just over a year after his father
became Vicar.
He was educated at Grantham (presumably at The King's School).
He entered Christ's College, Cambridge at the age of 18 in 1755,
gained his B.A. in 1760 and his M.A. in 1763.
Thomas Easton was ordained deacon in the Diocese of Lincoln in
June 1760 and priest in Rochester diocese in Dec 1761. He was
Curate at Gt Gonerby and Londonthorpe, Linncs in 1760, Fen Drayton
in Cambridgeshire in 1764-5 and of St Andrew's, Cambridge in
1765.
Before coming to Grantham in 1792, Thomas was Rector of
Barkston, Lincs, from 1766. He was Chaplain to the Duke of Hamilton
in 1768 and to the Duke of Somerset in 1792. He was also Rector of
Binbrooke St Mary 1768-1817.
He died on July 25th 1817. ( Peile, II. 261; Cant.
Act Bk.) From a Cambridge Alumni Database by J L
Dawson.
Thomas Easton was buried at St Wulfram's on 1st August 1817,
aged 70 years. The Burial Register describes him as being 'Vicar,
of Vicarage House, Grantham.'
A slate memorial commemorating Thomas Easton is in the central
aisle of the nave, at the west end, between the two sidesmen's
units. Unfortunately the inscription is badly worn, due to
the heavy footfall over it. However, the wording has been recorded
and reads:
"Here lie the mortal remains of the Rev. Thomas Easton
M.A.for 25 years Vicar of this parish. He departed life the 27th of
July 1817 age 70 years. And also of Elizabeth his wife who died
11th February 1821 age 71 years."
