Heraldry developed from the need to identify people,
particularly in battle. A simple form is the flag of
St. George. Over the centuries it became complex, with
a coat of arms showing the status of the individual and his
family.
The most obvious examples of heraldry in St. Wulfram's are
the hatchments on
the south wall and the the Royal Arms of
Elizabeth I (the earliest in Lincoln diocese, we believe), Charles
II and Elizabeth II.
