Hatchment for Henry Pennant, Esq.,
born 1713, who died unmarried on 31 May, 1772 and was buried in St.
Wulfram's on 2 June, 1772.
He owned a house in Grantham High Street from 1756 and also had
extensive property in the family sugar plantations of Jamaica. He
left these in his will to his elder brother John, whose son Richard
eventually inherited the entire estate. Richard, who later opened
up the Welsh slate trade, was created Baron Penrhyn in 1783, being
then granted the arms shown on the hatchment, which could not have
been painted before this date, eleven years after Henry's
death.
It is possible that the hatchment was
set up by the new baron as a mark of respect for his uncle, since
there is no other memorial either in the church or in the
churchyard.
